Some Free Stuff

This week I was busy seeing two specialists and looking for a house so the column kind of went by the wayside. I was able to round up some free stuff for you, which might help take the place of my usual commentary.

The Suvudu Free Library has a number of free books, which are up periodically replaced, with new books added monthly. Current books include:

Starfist: First to Fight by David Sherman and Dan Cragg features marines trapped on a desert planet with no support, hardly any water and many light-years between them and home.

The Demon Awakens by R.A. Salvatore sounds like an epic battle between good and evil, which of course can be shown in all kinds of ways; just think about the original Star Wars.

The Changelings: Book One of the Twins of Petaybee by Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough is about a pair of twins who are connected to their sentient planet.

Full Moon Rising: A Riley Jensen Guardian Novel by Keri Arthur is about a werewolf vampire hybrid, something I've been wondering about lately. It must be an interesting combination to say the least.
Perdido Street Station by China Mieville – I don't think I need to say anything beyond China Mieville do I?

The Briar King by Greg Keyes is the first in a quartet and takes place 2000 years post slavery, during a time of turmoil and terror.
King’s Property by Morgan Howell also deals with slavery, telling the story of a girl who is enslaved into a regiment of orcs.

The Brass Bed by Jennifer Stevenson is about Lord Randall, a terrible lover, who will be bound to a bed forever unless he can figure out how to please one hundred women. (Is that a curse? Some of my friends say bring it on!) Jewel, a cop, is sure the whole thing is a con and investigates.

Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning is about MacKayla Lane who discovers a hidden and powerful world after the tragic death of her sister.

Little Debbie is cruising around giving away one million cupcakes. More here:

Bass Pro is having a series of series of free Halloween events that include mask making, trick or treating and marshmallows, which is a pretty good combination if you ask me. There's plenty more going on including a stick bull riding competition and leather craft making. Get the details here:

Free Premiere Episode of Stargate Universe - Ming Na announced via Twitter that there are two ways to get the initial episode of Stargate Universe. She tweets to say, "I'm downloading SGU 4 FREE on iTunes right now! You can 2! Or on Then transfer 2 ipod"

Personally I'm too dumb to use iTunes. It's always a big struggle and in the end it tells me I need to do something I don't feel like doing, (adjusting my resolution, which would mean I wouldn't be able to read anything with my poor vision) so I can't really voice for the free episode but I did see where you could get it if you had a tame iPod. The links are right below the enormous section for buying the entire season. Good luck!

More Freebies from Douglas Clegg - Douglass Clegg is giving away quite a few goodies on his website, including his first published novel Goat Dance. You can also get widgets and avatars. If you sign up for his free newsletter you can get his brand new serial, The Locust.

Some Free Audio Books - Did you watch the Warehouse 13 where Myka walks through the looking glass and ends up ultra sexy? References to Alice in Wonderland abound but not everyone's read the book. You can grab it as an audiobook here and listen to it while you work out. That will keep your mind off all those boring leg lifts!

Free Diesel Sweeties - Looking for some comics to read? Richard Stevens has released 2200 Diesel Sweeties for free as PDFs and you can access them here: I think that would keep even Cameron from Sarah Connor Chronicles busy for a little while. Enjoy.

Free Album from the Bastard Fairies - You can download the entire Bastard Fairies album, called Memento Mori, for free at their website, You can also sign up for updates, etc. If you're under thirteen years old you'll need someone to download it for you.

And finally Playing for Keeps, Fun Superhero Novel Available as Free Podcast. A couple of months ago I read Mur Lafferty's superhero novel Playing For Keeps, a fun, intricate look at superheroes and what befalls those whose talents have been deemed second rate. You can get this book in all kinds of ways, the traditional book which you can buy from your regular bookseller, or you can listen to it as a free podcast, or you can download it as a PDF. Or you can do all three so you can listen to it on your way to work, read it in the bath and on your laptop while you wait for your programs to run.

One-Paragraph Review

This week's one-paragraph review is from HMM who writes in to say, "The new Trident tastes like the ass end of a berry. Do not put it in your mouth under any circumstances." Do you have a one-paragraph (or smaller) review you'd like to share? Send it in to me for consideration. You can reach me at
